Wayne Rooney netted a hat-trick as Manchester United put pressure on Chelsea, who visit Arsenal on Sunday.
United used a dominant second half to pull away at Fratton Park against Portsmouth and secure a 4-1 victory. Rooney opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 25 minutes before Pompey equalised through Kevin Prince Boateng's spot kick seven minutes later.
But after the interval, it was all United. The lively Rooney put the champions back in front from Ryan Giggs' pass and then stretched the lead, completing his hat-trick with his second penalty after 54 minutes.
With Pompey out on their feet, Giggs - who turns 36 on Sunday - put the icing on the cake late on, adding a fourth with a low free-kick.
If Rooney can take this goal-scoring form into the busy month of football ahead, United are a good bet to close the gap on Chelsea by the end of 2009.
