Soccer: Villa unable to keep Rooney out of the headlines

Wayne Rooney might have started on the bench in the Carling Cup final but he still made the decisive contribution as Manchester United beat Aston Villa 2-1 to lift their first piece of silverware of the season.

James Milner's penalty put Villa ahead early on but Michael Owen quickly levelled with a classy low finish.

But an injury to Owen then presented Rooney with his chance to come on and steal the spotlight. He did just that, expertly heading Antonio Valencia's cross past Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.

Martin O'Neill's side rallied late in the game but could not find an equaliser, allowing United to begin what they hope will be the first of many big parties during this campaign.
