Tennis: Toronto Masters expecting all-star cast

The top 44 seeds have confirmed their spots at the Toronto Masters in August, ensuring the event will be ultra-competitive.

Defending champion Andy Murray will have his work cut out with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and company all chasing silverware.

The tournament runs from August 7-15.

Soccer: Spain-Holland

Let me know your predictions....

I'm going for 2-1 Holland.

NBA: Lawson gearing up for huge season

Ty Lawson's 18-point masterclass against the Lakers during Summer League is about the best news the Denver Nuggets have had for months. Next season, Lawson's progress will be critical for a Nuggets team that has made no significant moves this off-season thus far.

He is expected to begin the season as Chauncey Billups' backup but, with Billups capable of playing off the ball as a 2-guard, the former North Carolina man should see far more minutes.

Denver is banking on the continued improvement of the likes of Lawson, Nene and Carmelo Anthony to keep them in the hunt in the West - and Lawson's efforts this week were a promising sign.

Soccer: World Cup Final preview

The 2010 World Cup has thrown up some shock results during the past month. Italy and France fell at the first hurdle while much-fancied Brazil and Argentina were dumped out dramatically in the quarter-finals. However, one prediction that can be safely made is that a first-time World Cup winner will be crowned on Sunday night.

The past 30 years have been rather cruel on both Holland and Spain where the World Cup is concerned. The likes of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Dennis Bergkamp, Josep Guardiola and Raul lit up the international stage but could not end their nation's wait for World Cup glory. Now the current crops have the chance to do just that.

Holland were given few column inches when pundits listed their favourites to dominate in South Africa but a lightweight group and some revitalised big names have helped the Dutch turn the tables. They are now one game away from finally going a step further than the great Johan Cruyff.

Three wins out of three in Group E showed they were taking nothing for granted. And the ruthlessness and focus put the likes of Italy, France and England to shame. Though there were few standout performers, the team displays caught the eye and the players looked fresh.

But Brazil loomed large in the last eight. Having disposed of Slovakia is slightly shaky fashion, Holland were clear underdogs as they took on Kaka, Robinho and company but Dutch boss Bert Van Marwijk's ability to get his stars playing brilliantly and for each other made Holland hugely dangerous.

And there was a belief that had been missing in previous tournaments. Wesley Sneijder had won the Champions League as part of a treble with Inter, van Bommel and Robben led Bayern Munich to the Champions League final. The more you looked at the Dutch team, the more you realised there were some real winners on show and that the younger stars are really fulfilling their potential.

The 2-1 victory over Brazil sent the Dutch into ecstasy and triggered the 3-2 victory over Uruguay. Having reached the last four, nothing was going to stop Holland from taking their place in the final. It has been a fabulous run and, though the defending has been concerning at times, the goals are flowing and confidence is high.

Spain, their opponents on Sunday, have been tipped for glory from the start but have reached the final without quite finding their best form. David Villa has been sensational and the midfield trio of Xabi Alonso, Xavi and Andres Iniesta have produced some glorious passing moves yet the free-scoring performers that were so confidently predicted before the tournament have not materialised. In fact, they are yet to score more than two goals in a game in South Africa.

After the surprise defeat to Switzerland in the first group game, the Spaniards have bounced back with five straight wins. All have been hard fought and the past three have finished 1-0 but it speaks volumes for the calmness within the camp. Though stubborn defences have frustrated Spain's attack, their own rearguard has improved round by round. Iker Casillas has been beaten only twice and both goals came in the group stage. For all Germany’s attacking threats, Spain held firm in the semi-final, subduing a side that had shrugged England and Argentina aside with real ease.

Fernando Torres' lacklustre tournament has been the one major concern and Barcelona's Pedro looks to have earned a spot ahead of the Liverpool man for the final. But aside from Torres' dip in form, Spain are growing stronger with each round and, like the Dutch, they have every reason to be optimistic.

It was high time that someone broke the World Cup stranglehold of the big four (Brazil, Italy, Argentina and Germany). After all, it had been around 80 years since a final featured none of these four nations. Refreshingly, times are changing and quality football continues to be rewarded. Two teams with attacking mindsets have prevailed in a tournament full of cagey, defensive tactics and this fact should be savoured.

Expect to see nerves and goals in equal measure on Sunday. Both sides have put together victories built on class and grit on the way to the final - now we just need an open, classic final to give the 2010 World Cup a fitting ending.

NBA: West opening up a little

With Carlos Boozer and Amare' Stoudemire crossing to the Eastern Conference, the over-crowded West just got a little easier.

Both Utah and Phoenix now face an uphill battle to be high ranking seeds next season, leaving the Lakers, Mavericks and Thunder as the most impressive squads.

The Nuggets could also be considered in the contender bracket if minor tweaks are made to the roster before November. Currently, though, Denver has frontcourt problems due to injuries suffered by Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen.

The West will still be fiercely competitive but a .500 season might well be good enough for the playoffs come April 2011.

Soccer: Third place playoff is a waste of time

Whoever decided that a third place playoff was a good idea has some major questions to answer. In the meantime, two teams still pained by their semi-final exits must rouse themselves for a pointless contest.

Yes, when a bronze medal is at stake, there are obvious merits to such a fixture. But you cannot help but pity the Germans and Uruguayans as they go through the motions in Saturday's clash.

NBA: Heat set to dominate?

It has been an amazing week in the history of the Miami Heat franchise. Next season, the fans in South Beach will be watching LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on the same team.

And it is a mouth-watering prospect. James, the two-time MVP, broke the hearts of his fans in Cleveland with his decision to join the Heat but it is hard to dispute the fact that his chances of winning a championship have increased overnight.

Playing alongside a superstar like Wade and a talented big man like Bosh was just too good an opportunity to turn down. From a one and done playoff team, Miami have morphed into an Eastern Conference heavyweight.

But is it enough? The new big 3 are a potent force yet Miami still have plenty of work ahead as they look to find suitable role players around them. Mike Miller has been mentioned as one possible recruit but the Heat have very limited wiggle room as far as the salary cap is concerned.

However dominant the trio looks on paper, they cannot create the dynasty they crave without a solid supporting cast. So the Heat front office have some busy weeks ahead as they chase the extra pieces in the puzzle.

Tennis: Nadal back on top at Roland Garros

Write off Rafael Nadal at your peril.

Just four months after his career looked to be in jeopardy after another injury at the Australian Open, the Spaniard is back at the top of the world rankings following Sunday's French Open triumph.

Five titles at Roland Garros puts Nadal one behind Bjorn Borg and the joy for tennis fans was the sight of the Spaniard close to his best once again.

His opponent Robin Soderling could not have done much more in the first set and early in the second. But Nadal's incredible defence eventually wore the Swede down. Time and time again, Nadal extended the point for an extra shot or two and turned defence into attack.

It sets things up perfectly for Wimbledon, the one slam Nadal missed last year. Roger Federer will be waiting but a revitalised Nadal will push him all the way.

NBA: Suns ready to lay Spurs ghost to rest

Goran Dragic's spectacular fourth quarter on Friday night put the Phoenix Suns one game away from the Western Conference Finals - and one big performance away from finally overcoming the San Antonio Spurs in the Playoffs.

After all the pain of previous eliminations against the Spurs, Steve Nash and company are now in a position to exorcise those demons, taking a 3-0 lead with a 110-96 win in Texas.

San Antonio are sure to bounce back in Game 4 but Phoenix will not be stopped. And there is plenty for the LA Lakers (assuming they see off Utah) to worry about ahead of the next round.

Nash and Amar'e Stoudemire have got the pick and roll working to perfection, Grant Hill is playing relentless defense to go with his lethal pull up jumper and Jason Richardson is red hot from three-point range.

Then throw in the Suns' bench, which is their true X-factor. Dragic has proved an able back up for Nash while Jared Dudley and Channing Frye are shooting the lights out from downtown. The group's overall intensity means that Phoenix do not skip a beat when the starters take a breather.

For so many years, the Spurs have been the unmovable obstacle but Phoenix is about to change all that.

Cricket: Australia dismantle India, send out message

The T20 World Cup is in full swing and it is no surprise to see Australia rising to the occasion. A 49-run win over India in Barbados confirmed that the Aussies have finally cracked this format of the game.

Much had been made of India's powerful batting line-up but, after David Warner's 72 sparked a total of 184-5, the Australian attacked ripped the Indians to shreds.

Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait bagged three wickets apiece as India slumped to 42-6 and then 135 all out.

While the Aussies are playing impressive cricket, they are not the only side excelling in the Caribbean. Michael Clarke and company will face stern opposition from South Africa, Sri Lanka and perhaps even England, who earned a big win over Pakistan on Thursday courtesy of a timely half century from Kevin Pietersen.

Soccer: United, Chelsea going to the wire

Wins for Chelsea and Manchester United took the Premier League title race to the final weekend of the season.

Chelsea grabbed a crucial victory over Liverpool at Anfield, helped in part by Steven Gerrard's horrendous backpass that allowed Didier Drogba to open the scoring.

Though United kept up the pressure with a 1-0 win at Sunderland, the Blues remain a point clear heading into a home clash with Wigan on the final day.

United take on Stoke at Old Trafford but know a victory may still not be enough.

NBA: Nuggets in need of a summer trade

When the season began, the Denver Nuggets had aspirations of improving on last year's trip to the Western Conference Finals. The core of the team was still intact and there was every chance that Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith and Nene would take their games to a new level.

Denver made a flying start and outmuscled Utah, Portland and the Lakers in the early stages of the season. Anthony was playing like a man possessed, leading the league in scoring and showing incredible focus, while Chauncey Billups was continuing to pull the strings.

At the All-Star break, the Nuggets looked the likeliest number two seed, even when Dallas made the big trade for Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood. But then news broke of George Karl's cancer battle, rocking Denver to the core. With influential forward Kenyon Martin going down with a knee injury around the same time, the Nuggets were suddenly in disarray.

A disastrous five-game road trip brought just a single win - in the final second in Toronto - and interim head coach Adrian Dantley struggled to pull the temperamental Nuggets into line. From a number two seed, Denver slipped to fifth before recovering to at least claim home court advantage in the first round of the Playoffs.

Not that it did them much good. Facing a depleted Utah team, the Nuggets were heavy favourites. They won Game 1 behind an Anthony masterclass but lost the next three with lazy defense and limited offense outside Anthony and Billups.

Nene was supposed to exploit the Jazz's lack of size down low, JR Smith had a clear advantage against Utah's Kyle Korver and Denver seemed to have enough guards to counter Deron Williams.

None of the above materialised. Nene went missing on the road, Smith sulked his way through Game 6 after an underwhelming series and Williams ran riot, carvering the Nuggets defense to pieces. The undermanned Jazz won in six games and thoroughly deserved it.

So where does Denver go from here? Clearly, the hopes that the 2008/09 roster would mature and progress this year were misplaced. The Nuggets cannot win with the current group, despite Anthony's solid play and the savvy leadership of Billups, who showed his big game nerve with 30 points in Game 6.

That means a trade is necessary to keep pace with their Western Conference rivals. After a summer of rest and recovery, you can be sure that Houston, Portland and New Orleans will be better next season - so even making the Playoffs cannot be taken for granted for Denver.

In an ideal world, the Nuggets will find a new home for Smith. His lack of maturity and questionable shot selection make him more of a liability than an asset. While he is great when he catches fire and pours in 20 or 30, if his shot is off he becomes a non-factor due to his poor defense.

There are plenty of options for Denver and one of them is Toronto's Chris Bosh. Sending Smith, Martin and a reserve might be enough to tempt the Raptors. Smith and Martin seem to be the best trade chips that the Nuggets have to play with and finding a healthy big man who can contribute at both ends is the number two priority this summer, after getting a healthy Karl back on the bench.

The Championship window is closing fast for this group, particularly with Billups entering the last few years of his career. Anthony is a free agent in the summer of 2011 and, unless there is more evidence of progress, he might seek greener pastures.

So, without doubt, the time is ripe for the Nuggets to make a headline-grabbing move this summer.

Soccer: Important summer for Manchester United

This season's title race is not over just yet. The Blues must still visit Anfield, ensuring plenty more drama in the final two weekends. United have not given up hope just yet.

However, it does not take a genius to realise that all is not well at Old Trafford. Even overlooking the tense situation regarding the Glazers, United have issues to address. And you can be sure that plans for next season are already being drawn up.

The truth of the matter is that this season's title race has been different from recent years. The top teams have slipped up more often - to the credit of the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester City, Burnley and others - and no team has consistently dazzled. This was a year that a good team, not a great one, would lift the trophy. And yet United may let the prize slip away.

As predicted last summer, this United squad has its limitations and is too dependant on a handful of key players. For stretches during this campaign this fact was hidden, largely by the brilliance of Wayne Rooney. Yet the lasting impression will be that United have not had enough quality to call upon.

So expect an interesting summer, regardless of the outcome of the title race. It remains to be seen how much money Ferguson will have to spend but there are obvious holes to plug. Three areas spring to mind as the United boss plots a mini revamp of his squad.

First, the champions need a reliable right back. At present, Rafael Da Silva is still maturing, Wes Brown is injury riddled and Gary Neville has been exposed against quality opposition. Rafael's lack of experience cost United in the Champions League against Bayern Munich and Ferguson cannot afford such lapses. The rest of the back four - Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra - is up there with the world's best but the right back slot needs attention.

While Rafael appears to be the long-term answer, a couple of names jump out as useful additions for the present in this position, though their availability is unclear. Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos would be a high end option – and might be tempted to leave the Bernabeu after several disappointing years – while Bayern Munich’s Philipp Lamm is another top drawer performer.

Next, a cultured midfielder capable of scoring ten goals a season is a real necessity. As Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs near the end of their careers, United must provide fresh legs to complement them. Darren Fletcher had an outstanding season and will remain a regular for years to come but Michael Carrick's form was patchy and his prowess in the last third remains limited.

While United are unlikely to lure Xavi or Andres Iniesta away from Barcelona, it is this type of player they are so badly missing. A central midfielder with vision, quick feet and a good engine would make a huge difference alongside Fletcher. In short, they need Scholes in his prime.

Assuming United can throw around £25M at this problem, the likes of Lyon’s Miralem Pjanic, Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff and Roma’s Daniele De Rossi look attractive options and would take some of the pressure off the strikers with their knack of finding the net. Valencia’s David Silva is another playmaker who has long been linked with United.

The third area to address is even more glaring and that is finding a partner for Rooney. Ferguson still loves the 4-4-2 formation but Dimitar Berbatov's low confidence and often feeble contributions have made that unworkable.

Instead, the 4-5-1 system has regularly been employed. This helps protect the weary legs of Scholes but a reliable strike partner for Rooney would relieve some of the burden on the England man's shoulders. United swooped for talented Mexican Javier Hernandez this month but the feeling remains that a proven front man is required, especially as the Michael Owen gamble failed to bear fruit.

Without breaking the bank, United could pursue Gabby Agbonlahor or even Robbie Keane. And of course, in an ideal world, they could table an offer for Valencia’s prolific striker David Villa. The addition of a predator like Villa would, in itself, push Ferguson’s side closer to matching Barcelona.

Of course, the United boss may well have considerably less to spend than the £70-80M or so required to address these three problem areas. But he could add to his transfer kitty by offloading Berbatov or even temperamental winger Nani.

It should be noted that after losing Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, United have exceeded expectations in pushing Chelsea all the way. But until they find the weapons to support Rooney, the Red Devils will struggle to match Europe’s finest.

ENDS

NBA: Deng and Bulls ready for bright future

Luol Deng and the Chicago Bulls may have crashed out of the NBA Playoffs in five games against the Cleveland Cavaliers but the GB star could not be faulted.

Charged with spearheading the Bulls offence and guarding Cleveland dangerman LeBron James, Deng rose to the challenge and cemented his standing as a talented small forward.

Though James, this season's MVP, averaged more than 31 points in the series, Deng played gritty defence on the Cavaliers' number 23. Despite giving up 30 pounds, he pushed James all the way.

Deng also chipped in consistently at the offensive end. With his trademark jump shot looking smooth, he scored 18.8 points in the series.

The Cavaliers are many people's favourites to win the NBA Championship this season. Yet the Bulls were not disgraced and, believe it or not, they can a lot of heart from that.

Now Deng must wait patiently to see how the summer unfolds in Chicago. The Bulls cleared enough cap space just before the trade deadline to chase a top free agent, such as the Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade, who is a Chicago native, or Chris Bosh of the Toronto Raptors.

With a strong, young core, which includes Deng, point guard Derrick Rose and center Joakim Noah, Chicago should be better equipped to make an impact in next year's post season, depending on their success in wooing a top free agent.

There could be a coaching change too. Head coach Vinny Del Negro's position has been the subject of speculation for the bulk of the season, even though he guided a solid but not spectacular Bulls roster into the Playoffs.

So there is plenty for Deng to digest as he enjoys a well earned rest this summer. After an injury hit year, the GB talisman is rediscovering his best form and it is perfect timing because next season promises to be the most exciting for Bulls fans since the great Michael Jordan left town.

Soccer: FLASHBACK - Nigeria win over fans at USA '94 in World Cup debut

The 1994 World Cup was a special event, hosted by a scorching USA and graced by some of the true greats of the game from Roberto Baggio to Romario to the controversial Diego Maradona. Viewers were treated to a combination of stunning goals, questionable haircuts and some major surprises.

The Republic of Ireland shocked the Italians with a 1-0 victory in the group stage while Bulgaria and Sweden reached the semi-finals. And then there were the Nigerians.

Making their World Cup debut, Nigeria were drawn in Group D with powerhouse Argentina, Bulgaria and Greece. It was a daunting group and few fancied the Nigerians’ chances of reaching the second round. However, manager Clemens Westerhof and his players had other ideas.

Nigeria made a dream start against a Bulgarian team featuring star man like Hristo Stoichkov. In front of more than 44,000 in Dallas, the Nigerians’ physical, athletic approach caught Bulgaria napping and by half-time they were two goals ahead. Rasheed Yekini opened the scoring after 21 minutes and Daniel Amokachi – who would later join Everton – doubled the lead two minutes before the break.

When Emmanuel Amunike netted a third ten minutes into the second half, the Nigerians were in dreamland. Instead of displaying nerves in their first World Cup game, they had seized the moment with a 3-0 victory.

However, a sterner test awaited in the shape of Argentina, who had hammered Greece 4-0 in their opening fixture. Striker Gabriel Batistuta, who smashed a hat-trick against the Greeks, was among the world’s best while Maradona was showing flashes of his genius again. And yet Nigeria took an eighth-minute lead through Samson Siasia.

With the world order in grave danger, the Argentines responded impressively as a Claudio Caniggia double turned the game on its head in the space of just seven minutes. Westerhof rolled the dice by throwing on Mutiu Adepoju and belatedly Jay Jay Okocha but ultimately the Nigerians fell to a valiant 2-1 defeat.

All was not lost, though. Nigeria travelled to Foxborough knowing that a victory over Greece would confirm their place in the second round. This World Cup adventure was bringing out the very best in the Nigerians and they duly punched their ticket for the last 16 with a 2-0 win, courtesy of Finidi George and Amokachi.

To add to the jubilation, Bulgaria stunned the Argentines with a 2-0 victory, meaning Nigeria finished as group winners. It was a deserved reward for the fearless performances that Westerhof’s side had produced in the searing heat.

Yet topping Group D also seemed a mixed blessing as it set up a second round clash with Italy. The Italians had begun the tournament slowly and looked out of sorts but still possessed some incredible talents, including Roberto Baggio, Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. It would be veterans against newcomers.

A crowd of more than 54,000 arrived at Foxboro Stadium and witnessed Nigeria make a flying start. Buoyed by their surprise run through the group stage, the Super Eagles once again took the lead against a superior opponent. Amunike, who had been on the scoresheet against the Bulgarians, netted after 25 minutes to set the game up perfectly. Could the Nigerians spring another surprise?

Predictably, the Italians responded with plenty of possession but when Gianfranco Zola was sent off with 15 minutes to go it seemed that Nigeria were in the clear. But, just two minutes away from reaching the quarter-finals, disaster struck for the Nigerians as Roberto Baggio levelled the scores.

Visibly deflated, Westerhof’s men headed into extra-time but were unable to capitalise on the numerical advantage. And that man Roberto Baggio broke Nigerian hearts in the 110th minute as his penalty sent Italy into the last eight.

Even after this emotional exit, there was plenty for the Nigerians to reflect on proudly. Expected to just make up the numbers in the group stage, they had rocked the established order and topped the group table.

And this wonderful performance paved the way for future Nigerian teams to prosper on the world’s biggest stage. Nigeria’s 1994 World Cup debut was followed by appearances in 1998 and 2002, with mixed results.

This summer, their tournament total will reach four when current boss Lars Lagerback sends out his team in South Africa. With a bit of luck, they might even go further than the heroes of ’94.

NBA: Playoffs begin with a bang

For those of you just tuning into the 2010 NBA Playoffs, the matchups are as follows:

EAST
Cleveland-Chicago
Orlando-Charlotte
Atlanta-Milwaukee
Boston-Miami

WEST
Los Angeles Lakers-Oklahoma City
Dallas-San Antonio
Phoenix-Portland
Denver-Utah

Day 1 of the Playoffs saw the home teams go 4-0. The Cavaliers topped the Bulls 96-83 behind 24 points from LeBron James. Cleveland built a 14-point first quarter lead, let Chicago close to within seven then pulled away down the home stretch. Derrick Rose poured in 28 for the Bulls.

The Atlanta Hawks took Game 1 of their series with the Bucks after using their advantage in the paint to establish a 22-point lead at the break. Milwaukee, behind an outstanding 34 points from Brandon Jennings, threatened to make a bold comeback but Joe Johnson, with 22 points, closed the door in the final minutes.

Boston and Miami certainly ensured the Playoff physicality was there from Game 1. Kevin Garnett was ejected for two technicals - the second for an elbow on Quentin Richardson - but the Celtics held on for an 85-76 win. The Heat led at half-time but managed just 19 points in the final 15 minutes, including a measly 10 in the fourth quarter.

But the most impressive individual performance came in Saturday's final game. Carmelo Anthony erupted on the Utah Jazz, scoring 42 points on 18-25 shooting as the Nuggets won 126-113. Melo, who averaged nine free throw attempts a night this season, did not even need the charity stripe (he took just four shots in Game 1). JR Smith added 20 and Nene chipped in with 19. Deron Williams paced the injury-hit Jazz with 26 points and 11 dimes.

The law of averages suggests that Day 2 will see an upset and that will be on the minds of the Lakers, Mavericks, Magic and Suns. The post season is well and truly underway and on Sunday eight more teams begin their Playoffs journey. It is sure to be mouth-watering action.

NBA: Raptors on the brink of disappointing ending

The mood inside the Air Canada Centre on Sunday after the Toronto Raptors' 104-88 loss to the Chicago Bulls said it all. A season that promised so much is now on the verge of disaster.

At the All-Star Break, the Raptors seemed certainties for the playoffs and were well-placed to secure the number five spot in the East. Now they look set to miss out on the post season altogether.

The injury to Chris Bosh could not have come at a worse time but the team's soft centre has been a problem throughout the past two months. Hedo Turkoglu looks a lost soul after a woeful year, Andrea Bargnani was schooled on the boards by the Bulls' Joakim Noah and continues to lack the physicality in the centre spot, while Jose Calderon is getting exploited defensively night after night.

There have been bright spots, namely Jarrett Jack, Amir Johnson and the improved Sonny Weems, but it may well be too late for this year's playoffs.

The Bulls have a tricky remaining schedule in the battle for eighth, facing the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats, but there is nothing to suggest the Raptors can apply pressure by beating the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks.

One thing is for sure: if the Raptors end up missing the playoffs, you can be sure that there will be some new faces in Toronto come October.

NBA: Celtics still a playoff threat

It has been an odd season for the Boston Celtics. Injuries continue to plague this aging team, the addition of Rasheed Wallace has yet to bear fruit and both Cleveland and Orlando have left Boston trailing.

But not rule them out just yet.

Whilst it is true that teams cannot just switch the quality play on for the playoffs, the Celtics know that it is the post-season where they will really be judged and they have plenty of proven weapons.

Rajon Rondo continues to be a revelation at the point. He has been the Celtics' star man this season and his speed and trickery give him an advantage in matchups with almost every guard in the league.

And the Big Three might be a little older but they are still outstanding talents. Though injury concerns persist for Kevin Garnett and now Paul Pierce, it seems as though Boston will enter the playoffs with a fully fit roster.

Anyone watching the Celtics against Cleveland and again in Toronto this week witnessed how dangerous Ray Allen still is as a perimeter scorer. Allen was the subject of much trade talk in February but he remains a key cog for Boston with his smooth shooting stroke and off the ball movement.

The Celtics will face either Milwaukee or Miami in the first round and their balanced attack should be too good. When the stakes are raised, expect to see the Garnett and Pierce of old resurface.

But then a showdown with the Cavaliers would potentially await in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. The teams split the regular season series but LeBron James has had a field day in recent meetings. Boston would be underdogs but any team boasting Rondo and veterans like Allen, Pierce, Garnett, Wallace and Michael Finley cannot be discounted.

The elder statesmen on the team know this could be their last swing for a ring and that will provide a little extra motivation. The Celtics are outsiders to reach the NBA Finals but do not be surprised if the playoffs bring out the best in Boston.

NBA: Update on race for number two spot in West

A big win for the Dallas Mavericks in Portland on Friday night kept them in pole position for the second spot in the West - but there are bound to be more twists and turns over the final five days of the season.

The Denver Nuggets sit third at present - and host the San Antonio Spurs tonight - while Utah moved into fourth with a battling win in New Orleans.

And a loss for the Phoenix Suns against Kevin Durant's Thunder dropped Steve Nash and company down to the number five spot.

Dallas' remaining games: @ Kings, @ Clippers, v Spurs
Denver's remaining games: v Spurs, v Grizzlies, @ Suns
Utah's remaining games: @ Warriors, v Suns
Phoenix's remaining games: v Rockets, v Nuggets, @ Jazz

Soccer: Manchester United enter must-win territory

Sir Alex Ferguson has been in the game long enough to know that if his Manchester United side fail to win against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Sunday, they can forget about a fourth straight Premier League title.

Ten days ago, United looked a good bet for a Treble. But their season now lies in ruins after losing to Chelsea and being dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Their league hopes are not dead yet though. Chelsea must still visit Tottenham and Liverpool in the next few weeks and may well drop points. But United have to be perfect over the rest of the campaign.

Starting on Sunday, against an improving Blackburn side, the champions need a big response.

NBA: Matchups to avoid

The Lakers want nothing to do with the Blazers and would settle for the Spurs or even the Thunder.

The Jazz have struggled against the Thunder and would prefer a clash with Portland or San Antonio.

The Nuggets have fared well against Utah and Portland but might prefer to avoid the Thunder. Plus, Phoenix has given Denver problems too.

Predictions out West:
LAKERS-SPURS
MAVS-BLAZERS
NUGGETS-THUNDER
JAZZ-SUNS

NBA: Race in the West set to go the distance

The Los Angeles Lakers might have locked up top spot in the West but the rest of the seedings are still very much up in the air.

The Denver Nuggets' victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday ended their miserable run of five losses in six games and suddenly Carmelo Anthony and company do not look so adrift in the race for the number two spot.

Denver sits fifth at present and face a string of tough games in the final two weeks - but as Chauncey Billups admitted, there will be plenty of musical chairs in the rankings along the way.

The Utah Jazz leapfrogged the Dallas Mavericks into second place after the latter's loss against the visiting Orlando Magic on Thursday. But the Phoenix Suns, winners of nine straight, are also eyeing up that position.

In truth, even the Oklahoma City Thunder, now sixth, could yet rise up the standings.

Denver travels to Phoenix for its final regular season outing and few would be surprised if nothing is decided before then.

Soccer: Flashback to Pato debut

When a whole city - and plenty more besides - is watching your every move and you have been dubbed as the team's saving grace, it takes a special talent to shrug off the pressure and live up to the expectation. When that team is AC Milan and those fans are the Rossoneri, that statement holds ever truer.

Alexandre Pato arrived in Italy in the summer of 2007, carrying the reputation as the new big thing in Brazilian football and sending the Italian media into an almighty frenzy. He was just 17 years of age yet the youngster bore the brunt of a hefty €22M price tag. However, owing to registration regulations, his Serie A debut for the Italian giants would have to wait until the January transfer window opened.

And the long wait just added to the anticipation, with pundits all over Italy trying to predict that impact he might have. Milan had responded to the serious doubts over their aging team by signing one of the game's hottest young properties. For all the experience of Paolo Maldini, Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Nesta, the squad was crying out for an injection of youth to reignite their assault on the Serie A title and the Champions League.

Then-manager Carlo Ancelotti did not hesitate to trust Pato's ability, handing him his league debut in the Milan red and black against Napoli on January 13. The Brazilian, who had turned 18 in September, lined up alongside compatriots Ronaldo and Kaka as Milan unleashed one of the most deadly strikeforces in Europe.

That night would prove to be a fairytale for Pato as he surpassed even the loftiest of expectations. Milan terrorised Napoli, conjuring wave after wave of attacks and prompting the fans inside the San Siro to celebrate the start of a new era, in which their team would provide a genuine challenge to city rivals Inter.

Pato showed immediately that he was at home on the big stage, displaying good touch, quick feet and not a shred of fear. He seemed to have it all. The crowd applauded his every touch as Milan stormed to a 5-2 victory – remarkably their first home Serie A victory of the season.

Ronaldo opened the scoring but, after Napoli levelled, Pato demonstrated his sharp football brain by making a series of clever runs off the ball. One such run led to the home side’s second goal. Pato raced through, saw his effort stopped by opposition keeper Gennaro Iezzo but was soon celebrating as Clarence Seedorf netted the rebound.

He continued to be a sparkplug in the second half, bringing out the best in Ronaldo and helping Milan establish an advantage after the break. Kaka’s low shot made it 4-2 before Pato’s big debut moment arrived. Finally rewarded for his vibrant performance, he outpaced the Napoli back four and calmly picked his spot to put the gloss on a hugely promising display. Cue the bucket-loads of praise.

Ancelotti wasted no time in highlighting the quality of Pato’s Serie A debut. The Milan boss told reporters: “'Pato is a very fast player with great technical skills and he is a mature guy. His debut is on the same line as that of Kaka in Ancona. The feelings are the same, there's value and there is a technically important element. I am really happy the fans applauded him and cheered him.”

Pato was equally thrilled with his promising start, saying: 'I must thank Milan for giving me the opportunity to play. I am really happy for the game and for the goal that I have scored. I always dreamt of playing a game for AC Milan and that dream has come true. In the future I want to become a great player in the Milan shirt.'

He may well do just that. In the past two years, he has developed further as a striker, establishing himself as a key man for Brazil and Milan. The Italian giants remain in a rebuilding phase but Pato, as his debut suggested, has become a huge star.

NBA: Thunder thump Raptors, continue surge for home court advantage

One team is soaring towards a high playoff seed, the other is treading water on the edge of the playoff picture. And this could not have been more evident on Friday night as the Oklahoma City Thunder trampled all over the Toronto Raptors, winning 115-89.

Kevin Durant led the way with 31 points and Jeff Green added 25 as the Thunder raced ahead and were up by 27 at the half.

With the Raptors' offense stagnating and their defense typically limited, Durant had little trouble getting to the rim while Green and Kyle Weaver punished Toronto with the three.

Amid boos and early crowd exits, the Thunder bolted on in the second half. Playing with the greater energy, their young line-up sliced through a Raptors team that is blowing up at the worst possible time. Only the injuries besetting the Chicago Bulls are keeping Toronto in the playoff picture. They remain eighth but have games with Dallas, Utah and Denver over the next seven days.

Meanwhile, Durant, Westbrook and Green sat out the entire fourth quarter. Their sights are set higher, zoning in on a top four finish. The Thunder are sitting pretty as dark horses to make the Western Conference Finals.

NBA: Nuggets answering call for bumper March

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl set his team the task of winning a minimum of ten games this month. With six games left in March, the Nuggets already have eight wins.

With a perfect 5-0 at home, Denver has hung around during the Dallas Mavericks' hot streak and is getting itself a good shot at the second seed.

Of the Nuggets' six remaining games in March, five are on the road. They include trips to Boston, Orlando and Dallas, which is a huge game in the race for the two spot. So you might say it is just as well that Karl's team have eight wins in the bag.

But this stretch might just bring out the best in the Nuggets, who have been average on the road this season yet boast wins over some of their rivals out West.

Barring a disaster, Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and company will get to their target for March but if they play to their potential they might just put down a marker for the playoffs too.

Soccer: United with big smiles after Champions League draw

Manchester United were seemingly the big winners at the Champions League draw for the quarter finals and semi finals. United were paired with Germans Bayern Munich but cannot face Barcelona, Arsenal or Inter until the final.

Arsenal against Barcelona is the standout tie of the round, with Thierry Henry returning to North London. The winner of that tie will play Inter or CSKA Moscow.

Meanwhile, the winner of United's tie will play the winner of the Lyon-Bordeaux tie.
Sir Alex Ferguson will no doubt have been delighted with the news, though Bayern will be no pushovers with Arjen Robben showing flashes of his best form again.

The door is also open for an outsider to reach the final and French football received a boost as one Ligue 1 club will be in the last four.

Despite the absences of heavyweights like Chelsea, Liverpool, AC Milan and of course Real Madrid, there is plenty more mouth-watering action ahead, including a possible repeat of last season's final.

NBA: Pistons' decline a sad sight

Detroit against Cleveland was a magnificent series back in 2007. LeBron James raised his game to a new level to overpower a Pistons team containing proven winners like Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton. It was one of the best Eastern Conference Finals of the decade.

Yet watching the Cavaliers win in Detroit 113-101 on Tuesday night, it was hard not to think once again about how far the Pistons have fallen. James' 29 points were a reminder that he and the Pistons are heading in opposite directions.

The trade that sent Billups to Denver was the catalyst for a decline that was already in progress. Without their leader, the Pistons have collapsed. Joe Dumars' deals for Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon have been equally disappointing thus far, leaving Detroit scrambling at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and thinking about the lottery.

From championship contenders to lottery team in two seasons (Detroit reached the Conference Finals in 2008) is a sad and frightening fall. It will be a fair while before the Pistons recover.

Soccer: Chelsea crash out of Europe as Mourinho enjoys perfect return to the Bridge

Chelsea's wait for Champions League glory must go on after former boss Jose Mourinho led current team Inter Milan into the quarter-finals 3-1 on aggregate.

The Italians arrived at Stamford Bridge with a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg but outstanding defending from Lucio and Walter Samuel kept Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka at bay.

Asides from a very good penalty shout when Samuel pulled down Drogba at a corner, Inter were comfortable and posed a threat on the counter attack.

For Mourinho, it was a tense night. Undoubtedly, he was aching to progress. His departure from Chelsea was hardly a quiet affair and the opportunity to put one over Roman Abramovich must have been mouth-watering.

Inter struck the sucker punch in the final ten minutes as Samuel Eto'o raced onto a sumptuous through ball and drilled a clinical low shot into the bottom corner. The Blues suddenly need two goals to force extra time and they had nothing left.

There was still time, however, for Drogba to enhance his reputation as a sore loser. The Ivorian was sent off in the dying moments after appearing to stamp on Inter's Thiago Motta.

Mourinho's celebrations were modest in comparison to his touchline sprint years ago at Old Trafford but inside he will have been jubilant. It was an emotional return to Stamford Bridge but one he will remember for all the right reasons.

As for Carlo Ancelotti's side, they must bounce back and focus on the Premier League and FA Cup. For another season, the Champions League trophy has proved beyond them.

Soccer: United go top with win over Fulham

Wayne Rooney kept his scoring run going with a classy double and Dimitar Berbatov added a third as Manchester United returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-0 victory over Fulham.

With huge games against Liverpool and Chelsea on the horizon, United needed this win and Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased to have heaped the pressure back on his team's rivals.

NBA: Nuggets looking to complete 4-0 road trip

JR Smith's 30-point eruption in Memphis has the Denver Nuggets on course for a perfect 4-0 road trip. The last challenge comes in the form of the Houston Rockets.

Denver got key contributions from Smith, Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups against the Grizzlies and managed particularly well without forward Kenyon Martin, winning the rebound battle in Memphis. Despite all the talk surrounding the Dallas Mavericks' hot streak, the Nuggets have won six straight and are back at number two in the West.

The Rockets will present different threats, though. Aaron Brooks is having a stellar year at the point and Luis Scola poured in 44 points against the New Jersey Nets at the weekend. Kevin Martin, acquired from the Sacramento Kings, is Houston's premier shooter.

But the Rockets are short of a shot blocker and cannot match the strength of Billups and Nene in the post. Shane Battier is a top stopper but will have his hands full with an in-form Anthony. Looking at the line-ups on paper, Denver has the varied scoring options to keep the Rockets guessing.

Billups' battle with Brooks will be the key area as two contrasting styles come head to head. The Nuggets point guard is scoring the ball more than ever before in his career and is stepping his leadership up another notch while George Karl cannot be with the team.

Denver is looking a real contender down the finishing stretch - despite an ugly schedule - and a 4-0 road trip would be the perfect boost for Karl as he watches from home.

Soccer: Chelsea, Arsenal earn vital wins

The three-horse race at the top of the Premier League goes on as Chelsea and Arsenal picked up important wins on Saturday, piling the pressure on Manchester United who face Fulham on Sunday.

Chelsea beat struggling West Ham 4-1 at Stamford Bridge to return to the top of the table but Arsenal left it late to grab the three points at Hull. The Gunners needed a last gasp Nicklas Bendtner goal to snatch a 2-1 win.

NBA: Nuggets bring solid form to face Grizzlies

Carmelo Anthony is looking unstoppable again, Chauncey Billups has barely put a foot wrong and Nene is asserting himself down low. So far, the Denver Nuggets have to be pleased with their form in March.

Since a disappointing loss in Phoenix on March 1, the Nuggets have won five straight, beating playoff teams Portland and Oklahoma City along the way. Coach George Karl is not with the team due to his cancer treatment but his players are doing him proud.

After cranking up their performance in the second half to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Nuggets outlasted New Orleans 102-95 on Friday and arrive in Memphis hot on the heels of second seed Dallas.

The Grizzlies still have playoff aspirations. Regardless of what happens over the next month, they have undoubtedly exceeded expectations for this season and talents like Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo have big futures.

But it is the frontcourt that will test Denver the most on Saturday night. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph are a potent double act on the boards and the Nuggets must do without the services of Kenyon Martin, who is still nursing a knee injury.

And that could be the decisive element. Nene, Johan Petro and Chris Andersen must challenge the Grizzlies' big men on the glass if Denver is to stay perfect on this four-game road trip. If they stay competitive in the rebounding battle, you can be sure that Anthony and Billups will do the rest.

Soccer: Pjanic the hero as Lyon stun Real Madrid, reach last eight of the Champions League

Miralem Pjanic's goal rocked the Bernabeu and left Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka et al devastated. You heard it here first:

Cricket: West Indies' struggles a sad sight

The West Indies have won two of their last three games yet leading the ODI series against Zimbabwe is nothing to get excited about - especially given the team's struggles in securing those victories.

With Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul - plus the returning Dwayne Bravo - the only top class players in the West Indian team, they are currently as out of their depth as ever when compared to the other top nations.

If they are stuttering to modest totals against the Zimbabwe attack, what are they likely to manage against South Africa, Australia or India? The Zimbabweans have played their part in making it an exciting series, with some clever batting and tight bowling, but above all these three games have underlined how far the West Indies have fallen.

NBA: No let up from West's elite

In the race for home court advantage come playoff time, the Western Conference battle looks set to go right to the wire.

The LA Lakers ended their three-game slide by edging past the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday nights. And on Wednesday the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz extended their winning streaks. The Lakers have lost three fewer games than the second-placed Mavs but all four teams will have plenty to say down the home stretch.

The Nuggets have the toughest schedule but, with Chauncey Billups having the best scoring season of his career, they still have their eyes on the big prize. And there is also a case for arguing that the Oklahoma City Thunder and Phoenix Suns, who are both within touching distance of fourth place.

For the West's elite, now is not the time to falter - and this week, they haven't.

Soccer: Beckham set for deserved ovation as he returns to Old Trafford

When David Beckham walks out at Old Trafford for AC Milan on Wednesday night, Manchester United supporters will finally get the chance to show their appreciation for the midfielder's years of service for the champions.

Beckham emerged from the United youth system alongside Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and the other Fergie Fledglings, won countless league titles and starred in the Treble-winning side of 1999. The standing ovation that he will surely receive ahead of the Champions League second round second leg will be fully deserved.

But there is unlikely to be a lot else for Beckham to smile about. Even if Wayne Rooney misses out through injury, United are too good for the Italians and, of course, hold a 3-2 advantage from the first leg. Expect Sir Alex Ferguson's men to comfortably move into the quarter-finals.

In Wednesday's other action, Real Madrid have a fight on their hands against Lyon. The Spaniards trail 1-0 and will need some magic from their heavyweight attack. Cristiano Ronaldo was masterfully smothered in the first leg but will be on a mission at the Bernabeu. However, if the Frenchmen find the net, Real will need three goals to advance and that might even be beyond the Galacticos.

Soccer: Malouda proving his quality

NBA: Nuggets head out for road trip tests

The Denver Nuggets are about to begin one of most important road trips of their season.

Denver play in Minnesota, New Orleans, Memphis and Houston and will know that only a solid trip can keep them in contention for a top two finish.

The Dallas Mavericks are red hot right now and the Los Angeles Lakers still hold the edge as number one in the standings - but the Nuggets can apply some pressure with a 4-0 road trip.

That is not beyond them. Kenyon Martin and Ty Lawson remain on the treatment table and George Karl will take time out for his chemotherapy sessions but, in Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony, Denver still have as good a 1-2 punch as any team in the league.

Billups tends to save his biggest scoring nights for the road, where he feels the need to be more aggressive and create his own shot. Scoring 39 in LA and 37 twice in Golden State makes for a solid resume this season.

And Anthony has his groove back, picking apart the Thunder, Pacers and Blazers during the Nuggets' three-game homestand. Apart from his duel with the Rockets' Shane Battier, Melo shouldn't have much trouble scoring on the upcoming trip.

The key will be the contributions that Denver gets from Nene and JR Smith, two players capable of passing the 20-point mark. Neither have scored consistently enough this season but both now have the chance to step up.

After all, this is the perfect time for the whole Nuggets roster to make a statement and do their coach proud.

Soccer: Sunderland finally back to winning ways, Birmingham refuse to falter

Sunderland managed to lift a little of the gloom around the Stadium of Light with a 4-0 win over Bolton.

Darren Bent stole the headlines, scoring a classy hat-trick and drawing a line under a difficult spell in front of goal. The Black Cats were too strong for Owen Coyle's side, who never recovered from Fraizer Campbell's 41-second opener - the fastest Premier League goal this season.

At Fratton Park, Portsmouth's woes continued with a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham. Cameron Jerome bagged a brace and the Blues are now just two points behind Liverpool as they continue to be this season's surprise package.

Soccer: Arsenal burst into last eight, Bayern sneak through

Arsenal were the big winners as the Champions League threw up two storming second legs on Tuesday night.

Arsene Wenger's men, trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Portugal, were rampant as they handed Porto a 5-0 drubbing at the Emirates. And all this without captain Cesc Fabregas, who missed out through injury.

And Nicklas Bendtner, mocked after some woeful finishing against Burnley at the weekend, was the hero as he netted a hat-trick. Samir Nasri added another with a superb solo effort and Emmanuel Eboue also got onto the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, in Florence, Fiorentina beat Bayern Munich 3-2 but went out on away goals, having lost the first leg 2-1. The hosts twice led by two goals but could not hang on. The decisive strike for the Germans came from Arjen Robben with an stunning long range strike.

Arsenal and Bayern have booked their quarter-final berths, check back tomorrow to see whether Manchester United and Real Madrid joined them.

NBA: Magic victory over Lakers opens doors for Mavs and Nuggets

The Lakers' first three-game losing streak since acquiring Pau Gasol has surprisingly opened up the race for top seed in the West. Their latest setback came on Sunday in Orlando against the Magic.

With Matt Barnes playing stifling defense on Kobe Bryant, limiting the Black Mamba to 12 of 30 shooting, Orlando held on for a 96-94 win. Vince Carter led the way for the Magic with 25 points.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks are closing in fast with an outstanding 11-game winning streak. Armed with Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood, the Mavs are suddenly a legitimate threat to the Lakers.

And the Denver Nuggets are in the running too. Three home wins - over Oklahoma City, Indiana and Portland - have kept the Nuggets close behind the top two. They might have the toughest stretch ahead of any team in the league but you can never count out a team blessed with talents like Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith and led by the ageless Chauncey Billups.

There is certainly plenty still to play for out West.

Soccer: Fabregas and Rooney doubts for midweek Champions League ties

Manchester United and Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of their star men as the second legs of their Champions League ties approach. Wayne Rooney missed Saturday's win at Wolves with a knee injury and Cesc Fabregas limped off in Arsenal's victory over Burnley.

Post-match interviews with both sets of coaching staff confirmed that the pair face a race against time to make the starting line-ups.

Arsenal have the more nail-biting wait as they trail Porto 2-1 from the first leg and have been hugely below-par whenever Fabregas is not in the side. Reaching the quarter-final will be a tough ask if the Spaniard misses the game.

United at least have a 3-2 lead heading into the second leg at Old Trafford and will fancy their chances of progressing, even if Rooney is unavailable. However, AC Milan have ample attacking threats and Sir Alex Ferguson will feel a lot calmer if Rooney recovers in time.

Soccer: Scholes the hero as United go top

With Wayne Rooney not fit enough to even make the bench, Paul Scholes stepped up to fire Manchester United to the top of the Premier League. The champions left it late but Scholes' calm finish with 17 minutes to go clinched a 1-0 victory over Wolves.

Sam Vokes spurned a glorious chance to level in injury time, firing over from close range, and Wolves crafted a number of good openings. On another day, they might have been celebrating a crucial three points.

Instead, United took their chance and moved two points ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal, who beat Burnley 3-1 at the Emirates.

Cricket: Kieswetter and Morgan breathing life into England batting

Craig Kieswetter and Eoin Morgan have emerged as stars of the present and future for England on the tour of Bangladesh, with match-winning ODI performances.

Check back over the weekend for an assessment of England's tour to date.

NBA: Lakers stutter on the road, Mavs and Nuggets protect home court

Just when the Los Angeles Lakers seemed to be romping away with the number one spot in the West, road woes have kicked in.

Kobe Bryant and company have lost in Miami and Charlotte this week, allowing the Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets to keep believing they can steal top spot.

While the Lakers scored just 83 points in a humbling loss to the Bobcats, the Mavericks outlasted the Sacramento Kings 108-100 in Dallas. The Nuggets followed suit, beating the Indiana Pacers behind a big night from Carmelo Anthony.

The Lakers will bounce back and, in all likelihood, finish top of the pile but things are at least getting more interesting at the summit of the Western Conference standings.

Soccer: United poised to go top

Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United players have a huge 90 minutes ahead of them against Wolves tomorrow. Victory will put the champions back at the Premier League summit.

With Chelsea in FA Cup action, United can still a march on their rivals but may have to manage without Wayne Rooney as they attempt to take three points at Molineux. Michael Owen is out for the season so Ferguson will be relying on Dimitar Berbatov to continue his improved run of form.

Meanwhile, Arsenal host Burnley and ought to grab an easy three points of their own, keeping themselves in the thick of the title race.

NBA: Nuggets back on track but road record needs work

After painful losses against the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns, the Denver Nuggets returned to winning ways in a 119-90 blowout victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Carmelo Anthony held the edge over Kevin Durant, dropping 30 points and scoring at will with his jumper, and the Nuggets moved to 40-21.

With the Dallas Mavericks overtaking Denver in the race for the second seed, this win was a timely boost for George Karl and his players, especially as the Thunder are a possible playoff opponent.

The Oklahoma City game was the first in an intriguing stretch for Anthony and company. Denver play 10 of 16 games on the road in March but a number of these are very winnable, including trips to New Orleans, New York and Minnesota.

The Nuggets have struggled on the road this season - a surprise considering the steady influence of Chauncey Billups - but this month presents chances to put that right.

Soccer: Villa unable to keep Rooney out of the headlines

Wayne Rooney might have started on the bench in the Carling Cup final but he still made the decisive contribution as Manchester United beat Aston Villa 2-1 to lift their first piece of silverware of the season.

James Milner's penalty put Villa ahead early on but Michael Owen quickly levelled with a classy low finish.

But an injury to Owen then presented Rooney with his chance to come on and steal the spotlight. He did just that, expertly heading Antonio Valencia's cross past Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.

Martin O'Neill's side rallied late in the game but could not find an equaliser, allowing United to begin what they hope will be the first of many big parties during this campaign.

Winter Olympics: Canada win dramatic hockey gold

Sidney Crosby's golden goal in overtime settled one of the most gripping hockey games in history as Canada beat USA 3-2 to win the gold medal. In doing so, Canada set a new record with the most golds ever for a host nation at the Winter Olympics - 14.

Leading 2-1 heading into the final seconds of the third period, Canada were within touching distance of the gold, only for Zach Parise to level with 24 seconds left.

But Crosby had the final say, firing home the winning goal from Jarome Iginla's pass to provide the perfect ending for Canadian fans.

Soccer: Rooney left on bench for Carling Cup final

Aston Villa's hopes of lifting the Carling Cup received a timely boost an hour before kick off when Sir Alex Ferguson only named Wayne Rooney as a substitute.

The United boss preferred Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen up front - no doubt to the relief of Martin O'Neill, Richard Dunne and company.

Soccer: Saha earns surprise Les Bleus recall

After all the injury problems that have affected Louis Saha over the past five years, it is hard for anyone to begrudge him his recall to the French national team for Wednesday's friendly with Spain.

When he is 100%, Saha remains a top class goalscorer with the pace and power to trouble the best defences - as he did against Chelsea this month. Sadly, injuries have popped up far too frequently for his liking, hurting his chances of making his mark.

This week, though, he has a chance to enter the running for a World Cup berth. He is a latecomer to the race to get to South Africa this summer but, if he can reproduce his Everton form on Wednesday, he might just sneak into the squad.

It is for an opportunity like this that Saha went through the countless rehab programs to overcome injury and this opening is a deserved reward for his determination to continue performing at the highest level.

Soccer: Capello forced to test supporting cast against Egypt

England's friendly against Egypt on Wednesday was supposed to give Fabio Capello the chance to put his favoured XI through their paces ahead of the summer and iron out any kinks. Instead, he finds himself testing out some of his reserves.

It is in defence that Capello is particularly short-staffed, with Ashley Cole and new captain Rio Ferdinand injured. In addition, Wayne Bridge has put himself out of the reckoning in the wake of the Terry scandal.

So while Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard should all be fit - and the latter will wear the armband against the talented Egyptians - there are question marks elsewhere. Leighton Baines and Stephen Warnock seem the likeliest players to cash in at left back while Wes Brown or Matthew Upson will fill in at centre back alongside Terry.

Then there is Aaron Lennon, who continues to be bothered by injury. He may well not be fit enough to take his place on the right flank and Theo Walcott is equally injury-dogged at present, leaving the door open for David Beckham or James Milner to start on Wednesday.

Having won three straight African Cup of Nations titles, Egypt will provide a stern challenge so, though it was hardly the original plan, Capello will at least learn more about his supporting cast this week.

Cricket: Run fest in India-South Africa series

Fans of high-scoring ODIs were treated to some pulsating action in the recent series between India and South Africa.

The Indians won the series 2-1, sealing it by winning the first two games. In the second match, India won handsomely on the back of Sachin Tendulkar's record-breaking double hundred. His 200 not out came off a mere 147 deliveries.

But South Africa hit back for a consolation win thanks to centuries from Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers, with the latter needing just 59 balls for his unbeaten 102.

For once, supporters will have been saddened that it was not a seven-game series.

Soccer: Carling Cup final

Manchester United are rightly heavy favorites to lift the Carling Cup on Sunday, even if they are missing the likes of Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand.

With Wayne Rooney in sparkling form, United are eyeing up a Treble and the Carling Cup presents the chance to bag the first piece of silverware of the season.

But Aston Villa cannot be underestimated. They have taken four points from United during the current campaign and possess the attacking outlets to test the Red Devils defence.

That being said, United should have too much on the day. Look for Rooney to get on the scoresheet and Sir Alex Ferguson's side to win 2-0.

NBA: Celtics wobbling

The Boston Celtics have major issues to address in the final six weeks of the regular season - and their struggles were highlighted on Saturday with an embarrassing 104-96 loss at home to the New Jersey Nets.

After fading badly in the second half in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, Boston faltered again when facing the team with the worst record in the NBA.

For the Nets, it was a huge morale boost. Brook Lopez led the way with 25 points while Devin Harris added 23 and Courtney Lee had 21.

But for the Celtics it should have been a wake up call. Unless they step up a few gears, they will be blown away by the Cavs, Magic and Hawks in the playoffs.

Soccer: City give United a helping hand

Much will be made of Wayne Bridge's refusal to shake John Terry's hand but the most decisive talking point to come out of Manchester City's 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge is Chelsea's faltering form.

Victory over Wolves a week ago seemed to have pushed the Blues into a position of real strength. Seven days later, Manchester United are just a point behind.

And Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti's problems are staking up. Terry has been weighed down by his off-field antics, Ashley Cole is out with a broken ankle and now Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti must serve suspensions following red cards against City.

The form of Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard cannot be called into question but the Chelsea back line looks shaky, especially with Petr Cech on the sidelines.

The title race is wide open once again, with Arsenal closing in as well after a 3-1 victory at Stoke, and Saturday was a day of celebration for all of Manchester.

NBA: Nuggets look for third win of the season against Lakers

After losing in six games to the Los Angeles Lakers in last year's Western Conference Finals, the Denver Nuggets needed to come back strong against their biggest foe. Thus far, they have done just that.

The Lakers might have a firm grip on the number one spot in the West but the Nuggets have won both games between the teams this season - and comfortably at that.

Denver scored a 105-79 blowout at the Pepsi Center on November 13 then followed it up with a huge 126-113 win in LA on February 5, behind a career-high 39 points from Chauncey Billups.

Unquestionably, the pressure is on the Lakers heading into this one. Kobe Bryant and company need a win to regain confidence against a Denver team that they might well see again come playoff time. A 3-0 lead in the season series would hand the Nuggets even more psychological points.

Billups and Carmelo Anthony will once again carry most of the offensive slack but the Nuggets may have to manage without Kenyon Martin (knee), which is a concern against Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom.

Following hot on the heels of the Suns-Spurs clash, it promises to be an intriguing afternoon of basketball.

NBA: Cavs look to snap losing streak while Thunder seek 10th straight win

Tuesday night throws up a couple of intriguing contests. The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost three in a row since the All-Star Game and look to end their slide against the New Orleans Hornets, winners of their last two.

Despite new face Antawn Jamison's solid night, the Cavs lost in Orlando on Sunday and need to steady the ship back on their home floor. The Hornets are just trying to stay in contention while Chris Paul recovers from his latest injury setback.

And over in Oklahoma, Kevin Durant will be bidding to extend his run of 25+ point nights against the visiting Phoenix Suns, who are expected to be without All-Star guard Steve Nash. The Thunder are on a stunning run at present, sitting fifth in the West, and will go after their 10th straight win.

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Soccer: Portsmouth's misery continues

Bottom of the table Portsmouth suffered yet another setback in their disastrous campaign, losing 2-1 at home to ten man Stoke.

Pompey took the lead through Federic Piquionne but Stoke levelled five minutes after half time with a Robert Huth header.

Andy Wilkinson saw red for a second yellow card with almost 20 minutes to go but, with the home side desperately trying to capitalise on the numerical advantage, the Potters hit the knockout punch in the first minute of stoppage time through Salif Diao.

Diao was on loan at Portsmouth during the 2005/06 season but may now have condemned the South Coast side to relegation to the Championship.

NBA: Nuggets-Celtics headlines Sunday schedule

A special ABC double-header awaits NBA fans on Sunday with four of the elite teams in action.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have dropped two straight since the All-Star break and will have their work cut out in Orlando against the Magic. Dwight Howard has stepped up his game and Vince Carter seems to have rediscovered his shot.

But it is the Denver Nuggets-Boston Celtics clash later in the afternoon that looks to be Sunday's best offering. The Celtics are out to prove a point and may have new face Nate Robinson suited up. Road wins in LA and Portland show that the Celtics mean business and are starting their push towards the playoffs.

Ray Allen looks revived by the week off, Kevin Garnett is hungrier and more mobile and Rajon Rondo continues to provide the spark. Now Boston just need a bigger contribution from Rasheed Wallace and a healthy Marques Daniels.

Denver has gone 5-5 in its last 10 games, albeit against tough opposition, and Friday's loss to the Washington Wizards was perhaps its most embarrassing of the season. Chauncey Billups continues to light it up, scoring 28 in Washington and averaging a career high 19.7 points a game. Since January, he has been on a tear.

Carmelo Anthony is shooting it well too. He had 40 points in Cleveland on Thursday but went 0-5 in the fourth quarter against the Wizards as the Nuggets threw the game away in the final 12 minutes.

With all the hype and expectation regarding a Cavs-Lakers, LeBron-Kobe showdown in the NBA Finals this year, the Nuggets and Celtics are perhaps the two likeliest teams to prevent it. Sunday's clash will assess just h0w ready they might be to do that.

Soccer: Chelsea and Arsenal earn precious wins

Chelsea moved four points clear at the top of table with a 2-0 victory at Wolves courtesy of a Didier Drogba double.

The Ivorian struck in each half to sink Mick McCarthy's side, who could have given no more in terms of work rate and passion. Wolves just did not have the killer instincts of Drogba to call upon - and ultimately that was all that separated the two teams.

And at the Emirates, a Nicklas Bendtner goal was enough to send Sunderland to yet another defeat. The Dane tapped home in the 27th minute from Emmanuel Eboue's cross.

Having been written off three weeks ago, Arsenal are now just two points behind second-placed Manchester United and six points off the top.

Golf: Woods makes tearful apology

Tiger Woods spoke publicly on Friday for the first time about his infidelity and the scandal that has engulfed the golf world since the end of November.

"I was unfaithful, I had affairs and I cheated. What I did was unacceptable," he admitted.

"I hurt my wife, my kids, my mother, my wife's family, my friends, my foundation and kids all around the world who admired me."

Woods did not confirm when he would return to the Tour, stating only that he would be back at some stage.

Winter Olympics: Medal count update

After the first week of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, it is the USA sitting pretty at the top of the medal table with a haul of 20, including six golds.

The wily Germans are a distant second with 13 and Norway is third with a tally of 10, though half of those are golds.

Canada is next with eight medals but the hosts will look to make up ground as they are favourites to win gold in the men's and women's hockey.

Meanwhile, Great Britain grabbed its first medal of the Games as Amy Williams took gold in the skeleton, setting a track record in the process.

Cricket: Pietersen back among the runs

After a rough tour of South Africa, Kevin Pietersen is bouncing back in the Twenty20 series with Pakistan.

First, his unbeaten 43 set up England's comfortable victory in the 1st T20 and then a rapid 62 - from just 40 deliveries - helped post 148-6 in the 2nd T20.

In reply, Pakistan are rocking at 12-2.

Soccer: Everton rock United's title challenge

Home grown talents Dan Gosling and Jack Rodwell came off the bench to score the crucial goals as Everton stunned Manchester United 3-1 at Goodison Park.

Ten days after beating Chelsea 2-1, the Toffees produced another gritty display and deserved to take the points. Like against the Blues, Everton had to do it the hard way after falling behind to Dimitar Berbatov's smart finish. But Diniyar Bilyaletdinov levelled just two minutes later with a swerving strike into the bottom corner.

United had a couple of half chances in the second half, with the score at 1-1, but too often the final let them down and Wayne Rooney looked a shadow of the man who terrorised AC Milan in midweek.

And Gosling, a second half substitute, made the champions pay just under 15 minutes from time as he turned in Steven Pienaar's perfect cross. Sir Alex Ferguson, though, might well question Antonio Valencia's failure to track back and Patrice Evra's weak attempt to deny Gosling.

With Goodison Park rocking and United bombing forward, fellow sub Rodwell skipped past Jonny Evans, who had another shaky game, and fired low past Edwin van der Sar to seal the three points for Everton.

When all is said and done come May, Ferguson may well look back on this result as a killer blow in the title race.

NBA: Celtics grab another big win

Some people might be writing off the Boston Celtics' chances of winning an NBA title this season but the players have not stopped believing - and an easy win in Portland made it a great week for Doc Rivers' team.

Fresh from a gritty 87-86 victory over the Lakers in LA, Boston downed the Trail Blazers 96-76 with one of its best road wins of the season.

And the form of Ray Allen - the subject of plenty of trade whispers over the past few weeks - has been exceptional. He dropped 24 points against the Lakers on Thursday and added 21 in Portland on 9-15 shooting.

The Celtics shot 53% and held the Blazers to a measly 34%.

Elsewhere, the Dallas Mavericks scored a big win in Orlando while the Utah Jazz outgunned the Golden State Warriors.

The shock of the night came in Washington, where the Wizards - minus Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison and Brendan Haywood - used a mammoth fourth quarter spurt to beat the Denver Nuggets. One night on from beating the Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver blew a 13-point lead and wasted a 28-point outing from All-Star guard Chauncey Billups.

NBA: Anthony posts 40 as Nuggets end Cavs' win streak in OT

The Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trail Blazers might have upgraded with key moves ahead of the trade deadline but the Denver Nuggets have lofty ambitions of their own - just ask LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Denver signalled its intent to return to the Western Conference finals with a big 118-116 OT win in Cleveland, snapping the Cavs' 13-game win streak behind Carmelo Anthony's 40-point effort. James and Anthony went toe-to-toe throughout and the Cleveland man was unlucky to be on the losing team after pouring in 43 points to go with 15 assists and 13 rebounds.

The Nuggets got 18 points apiece from Kenyon Martin and Chauncey Billups, who missed a game-winning 3-pointer at the end of the fourth quarter.

In OT, Denver got ahead early and held their nerve as Billups found Anthony, who buried the go-ahead jumper with 1.9 seconds on the clock. It proved to be the winning bucket as James' desperate 3-pointer was off the mark as time expired.

The Cavs were without the recently-acquired Antawn Jamison but the former Wizards power forward was courtside with his new team-mates and Cleveland could have done with Jamison down the stretch.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets improved to 13-13 on the road and continue to show they can win anywhere - even if they have slipped up in Sacramento, Detroit and Charlotte already this season. This was Denver's latest big road scalp and coach George Karl must be encouraged by the way Billups and Anthony continually step up down the stretch. On several occasions, Karl opted not to call a timeout late in the game, knowing that Billups, in particular, would make the smart play.

Things get no easier for the Nuggets in the near future with games against the Celtics and the Lakers on the horizon. But Denver seems to save its best for the playoff-type contests and, with Anthony on fire, will fancy its chances against anyone.

Soccer: Liverpool limp to victory

Liverpool needed an 81st minute winner from David Ngog to beat Unirea Urziceni 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League tie.

While the clean sheet pleased boss Rafa Benitez, the Reds are still well below their best, which is a worrying sign ahead of a huge weekend clash with Manchester City.

Unirea still have it all to do at home in the second leg but it would be just typical of Liverpool's season if they threw away the advantage when they travel to Romania.

NBA: Nuggets attempt to halt Cavs' streak at 13

The Denver Nuggets' tough February schedule continues as they travel to Cleveland for their first game after the All-Star break, hot on the heels of the sad news about George Karl's battle with cancer.

LeBron James and the Cavs have won 13 straight games and boast an outstanding home record but will have their hands full coping with Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. Plus, the Nuggets have saved some of their best performances for big road games this season, winning twice in San Antonio to go with victories in LA, Utah and Portland.

Cleveland continue to look for a deal ahead of the trade deadline, with Amar'e Stoudemire and Antawn Jamison heading the wishlist. But the Cavs are doing just fine as they are and tomorrow's clash could well be a classic.

Soccer: Porto, Bayern seal narrow advantage

Both of Wednesday's Champions League fixtures ended 2-1 to the home side, leaving things beautifully poised for the second legs.

Porto beat Arsenal 2-1 thanks to Falcao's hotly-disputed second half goal from a quickly-taken free-kick to leave Arsene Wenger fuming. But the injury-hit Gunners should be close to full strength for the return match and, though their defending was shambolic for both goals they conceded, they remain favorites to go through.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich used a controversial goal of their own to grab a slender advantage over Fiorentina. Miroslav Klose scored the winner but from an offside position. However, the Italians will fancy their chances of overturning the deficit in the second leg in front of their own supporters.

NBA: Mavericks fans get first glimpse of Butler, Haywood

The Dallas Mavericks made the first big move before the trade deadline and their new faces - Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson - will be on show for the first time tonight against Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Mavs hope this trade - in which they surrendered four players including Josh Howard and Drew Gooden - will push them closer to the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets in the West.

Soccer: Lyon stun Real

A second half thunderbolt from Jean Makoun helped Lyon grab a 1-0 advantage to take into their second leg against Real Madrid.

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka subdued by the French side's relentless pressing, Real had little to offer as a Plan B. Instead, Lyon will feel somewhat disappointed not to have extended their lead.

It is all perfectly poised for the return game at the Bernabeu, where Ronaldo and company will need to find top gear if they want to avoid another Champions League second round exit.

Soccer: United lean on talisman Rooney to overcome sloppy start

AC Milan 2-3 Manchester United

If anyone needed convincing that Wayne Rooney is the world's most in-form striker, they only had to watch his two-goal masterclass at the San Siro as Manchester United put one foot into the Champions League quarter-finals.

Rooney received limited service in the first half yet still looked one of the visitors' biggest threats, firing one left-foot strike wide and worrying Alessandro Nesta with his pace and power. And after the break, he was both breathtaking and unstoppable.

AC Milan made the perfect start as Ronaldinho's deflected strike left Edwin van der Sar helpless. United had Rio Ferdinand back at the heart of the back four but he and Jonny Evans endured a torrid first half, wasting possession and being caught out time and again as Milan counter-attacked.

By the time United pulled level through Paul Scholes, Milan should have been two or three goals to the good. But their failure to capitalise let Sir Alex Ferguson's side off the hook and Scholes equalised with arguably the luckiest goal of his career. Swivelling to meet a Darren Fletcher cross, he mis-kicked with his right foot only for the ball to ricochet off his standing leg before trickling in off the far post.

Ferguson's half-time team talk certainly hit home. United were a rampaging animal in the second half with Fletcher everywhere in midfield and Rooney on the prowl. David Beckham, on the other hand, had little impact against his former club.

And they were rewarded when Rooney blew the tie wide open with two goals in eight minutes. Moments after the ineffective Nani was replaced by Antonio Valencia, United went ahead. Valencia's cross picked out Rooney and the England hit man nodded a stunning header past Dida.

His second was far simpler as he headed home Fletcher's pass, leaving United looking home and dry.

That should have been the end of the tie but complacent defending from Rafael Da Silva allowed Ronaldinho to find Seedorf and the Dutchman flicked the ball past van der Sar to give the Italians a lifeline.

Seedorf's goal keeps the tie alive but the second leg - at Old Trafford on March 10 - is United's to lose now and they should be giving Rooney a hefty pat on the back for that. Ferguson had said pre-match that his striker could now be considered among the game's elite and Rooney backed up those words with another sublime performance.

As for Milan, much will depend on Ronaldinho, who showed flashes of his old genius and strengthened his case for selection for this summer's World Cup. Age is not on their side and their legs deserted them in the second half when United were on top. It will take a monumental effort to overturn this deficit.

Much of the attention had been focused on Beckham facing his former club but instead Rooney made his mark and pulled the spotlight away from the past and back onto the present.

Soccer: Leonardo facing biggest test yet

The visit of Manchester United on Tuesday will see David Beckham back in the spotlight - but his manager Leonardo is under scrutiny too.

The Brazilian desperately needs a victory over United to strengthen his position at the helm while the consequences of elimination could be dire.

He will be counting on some huge performances from his more experienced heads like Ronaldinho, Beckham and Andrea Pirlo along with the youthful Pato in attack.

However, you can expect Leonardo to be losing a lot of sleep at the moment if he has been following the recent performances of United's Wayne Rooney.

NBA: Bosh emphasises his value

Chris Bosh is having a career year and he showcased his considerable skills again at the All-Star Game, scoring 23 points and the winning free throws.

The Toronto Raptors forward will be one of the most desirable free agents this summer, with Cleveland and Miami likely to want to team Bosh with LeBron James or Dwyane Wade and many others in the hunt too.

Bosh's ability to rebound, shoot jumpers and drive to the basket have been evident this season as he has established himself as a double-double machine. His physical performance on Sunday off the bench (purely on form, he should have been a starter ahead of Kevin Garnett) just reminded fans that he is among the game's elite at present.

The Raptors will have a lot of suitors to fight off this summer.

NBA: East relieved to see ball out of Billups' hands

Twice in the final 10 seconds of Sunday's All-Star Game, the West took timeouts. On both occasions, they trailed the East by two points and George Karl drew up plays for a potentially game-winning shot.

The first found the hands of Dirk Nowitzki, who was fouled and made both free throws, and the second play saw Carmelo Anthony miss a 3-pointer as the clock expired.

The East will have breathed a big sigh of relief - and not just because they had held on for the 141-139 victory. Much of the relief will have stemmed from the fact that on both plays, Chauncey Billups did not get to shoot the ball.

Billups poured in 14 points in the fourth quarter and hit five triples on the night. As always, he was thriving in the pressure situations and did as much as anyone to close the East's lead in the second half.

The most obvious play - and perhaps one that Karl discussed or even tried to set up - was to get Billups open on the perimeter. Sadly, it did not work out that way and players whose reputations seem to place them ahead of Billups in the pecking order took the final shots.

Nowitzki and Anthony have hit their fair share of game-winners, of course, but Billups has a ring and a Finals MVP trophy and bizarrely that seems to be overlooked at times.

When it comes to clutch shooting there are few who can match Mr. Big Shot and that explains why Stan Van Gundy and the East players looked so happy to see the ball out of Billups' hands with the game on the line.

Soccer: Forest entering crucial stretch in promotion chase

Few fancied Nottingham Forest as promotion candidates in August but Billy Davies' side have forced their way into contention.

At the City Ground, Forest have been terrific, producing a string of positive, attacking displays on the way to 11 wins. In fact, no team in the league have scored more goals at home heading into Tuesday's fixtures.

But this is a huge week for Forest. They sit third, trailing Newcastle and West Brom by five and four points respectively, and stuttered to defeat against Doncaster at the weekend.

And the next seven days throws up two massive tests of their credentials. First, Forest head to Brammall Lane to take on a Sheffield United side who are a point outside the top six. Then they host Middlesbrough, who are also in hot pursuit of the playoff spots.

One way or another, we will learn a lot more about Forest's sticking power over the next week. Taking six points would be a big statement of intent and would heap the pressure on Newcastle and West Brom.

NBA: Wade claims deserved MVP honors as East win All-Star Game

Led by 28 points from MVP Dwyane Wade, the Eastern Conference All-Stars outlasted their Western Conference counterparts 141-139 in front of more than 108,000 fans in Dallas.

The Miami Heat shooting guard added 11 assists while LeBron James chipped in with 25 and Chris Bosh added 23 as the East withheld a fourth quarter rally from the West, for whom Chauncey Billups scored 14 of his 17 points in the final 12 minutes.

Carmelo Anthony paced the West with 27 points and home favorite Dirk Nowitzki poured in 22. Anthony had a chance to be the hero in the final seconds but he was off target with a potential game-winning 3-pointer and the East escaped.

NBA: Nate completes Dunk Contest three-peat

Demar DeRozan produced the dunk of the competition but it was defending champion Nate Robinson who prevailed, becoming the first ever three-time winner.

DeRozan - of the Toronto Raptors - brought the crowd to its feet in the first round with a dunk using the side of the backboard, scoring a maximum 50.

But it was a rare high point as the contest lacked some of its usual spark and drew criticism from TNT's Charles Barkley. In the final, Robinson had the marginally better dunks and scooped the trophy with 51% of the fan vote.

NBA: Pierce tops Billups, Curry to win 3-Point Contest

Paul Pierce racked up a total of 20 in the final round to lift the 3-Point Contest trophy for the first time.

Chauncey Billups and Stephen Curry joined Pierce in the final and Curry, in particular, looked on course to top Pierce's tally.

But the Golden State Warriors rookie guard fell agonisingly short on 17 and Pierce was able to celebrate his victory with team-mate Kevin Garnett, who was sat courtside.

Soccer: Countdown is on for Beckham's reunion with Man Utd team-mates

The clock is ticking as David Beckham looks ahead to the return of the Champions League and the visit of former club Manchester United on Tuesday.

Beckham's current club AC Milan have dropped off the pace in Serie A but will lean on positive memories of eliminating United in 2005 and 2007 as they prepare to take on the English champions.

While Ryan Giggs' fractured arm will keep him out of the first leg at the San Siro, Beckham can expect to see fellow Fergie Fledglings Paul Scholes and Gary Neville in the United squad. Having spent many happy years at Old Trafford, winning the Champions League along the way back in 1999, the England midfielder is bound to have mixed feelings when he is reunited with former team-mates.

It is sure to be an emotional night for Beckham and, judging by United's recent red hot form, it could be a rough one for the Italians.

NBA: Nash crowned Skills champion

One night on from helping light the Olympic flame in Vancouver, Steve Nash lifted the Skills Challenge trophy after beating defending champion Deron Williams in the final.

Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma Thunder and Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks were both eliminated in the opening round before Nash's time of 29.9 seconds in the final was too much for Williams to overcome.

Nash and Williams will be back on the court tomorrow night for the All-Star Game.

NBA: Durant wins H.O.R.S.E trophy

Kevin Durant got his All-Star weekend off to a flying start as he outlasted Omri Casspi of the Sacramento Kings and Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics to win the H.O.R.S.E. event in Dallas.

Casspi made an early exit but Durant and Rondo brought their A game, sinking a string of 3s. The Oklahoma Thunder forward had the last laugh, though, winning his second straight H.O.R.S.E. title as a Rondo jumper rimmed out.

NBA: Wily Wallace filling the void as Celtics sink Raptors

When the Boston Celtics snapped up free agent Rasheed Wallace this summer, everything suggested it was a brilliant move. And he is certainly living up to the hype.

With Kevin Garnett out injured again, Wallace has been shifted into the starting line-up. He might have been signed to bolster the frontcourt bench options but he was also an insurance policy in the event that Garnett's health issues caused him to miss a chunk of the season.

And on Sunday he showed the Toronto Raptors that he can fill the void left by Garnett. Wallace made a string of huge shots to deflate the Raptors, scoring 29 points on 9-12 shooting. Rajon Rondo righting took plenty of plaudits for his triple-double effort but it was 'Sheed who torched Toronto most severely.

Wallace knocked down five 3-pointers and had eight rebounds to go with his season-high points tally. The Celtics are unlikely to make the NBA Finals without a fully fit KG but try telling that to the former Piston, who is chasing a second ring.

Wallace was on fire on Sunday and come May he could be the Celtics' difference-maker.

Soccer: Beckham improving AC Milan

You cannot fault David Beckham - he knows how to make an instant impact. Having just returned to AC Milan on loan, he is breathing new life into the Rossoneri's season.

And the 3-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday was further proof that Beckham is a good fit in Milan. Playing in an advanced role on the right, he was a threat throughout while Ronaldinho put in a slick display of his own on the other flank.

If Beckham keeps this up, AC Milan will be rolling into peak form in time for the enthralling visit of Manchester United when the Champions League returns in February.

NBA: Returning Billups sparks Nuggets past Cavs

Chauncey Billups returned from a groin injury last night with 23 points as the Denver Nuggets held off the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 99-97 victory.

LeBron James had a big night with 35 points but the Nuggets did a good job defensively on James' team-mates.

With Carmelo Anthony still on the sidelines, Billups took control early with eight first quarter points but it was in the third quarter that he was most integral as he scored 11 points to hold off a spurt from James.

Cleveland still held the upper hand, though, heading into the fourth with a four-point lead and were up 91-88 late on. But Denver - a different team with their leader back on the court - rallied and a huge 3-pointer from JR Smith left the Cavs too much to do.

With Utah falling to the Grizzlies and Dallas sinking the Spurs, it was important that George Karl's team tightened their grip on a top seeding and their gritty performance achieved just that.

James and company continue their five-game road trip in Portland on Sunday while the Nuggets visit the Kings in Sacramento tonight.

Cricket: South Africa call up Parnell and Tahir

Needing a win in the final Test to square the series, South Africa have called up uncalled pair Wayne Parnell and Imran Tahir.

Paceman Parnell has had success in the one day game and will pose a different threat as a left arm seamer.

Tahir, who impressed as an overseas player for Hampshire, provides a more attacking spin option which may appeal to South Africa captain Graeme Smith as he chases the 20 wickets needed for victory.

England, meanwhile, are likely to remain unchanged, despite Kevin Pietersen's poor form.

NBA: Billups, Anthony hopeful of returning v Cavs

The Denver Nuggets have endured a tough run without first Chauncey Billups then Carmelo Anthony but both are expected to return against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.

Despite a vital win over the Warriors in their last outing, the Nuggets have struggled badly since Billups picked up a groin injury against the Rockets in mid December.

But with their two All-Stars back in the line-up, Denver should return to being one of the biggest threats to the Lakers in the West.

Soccer: Vieira set for Man City switch, Birmingham land Michel

The January transfer window is now in full swing and Manchester City were always likely to be active. New boss Roberto Mancini is keen to strengthen his squad for an assault on the top four and former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira is expected to be his first addition.

Vieira, who skippered the Arsenal Invincibles of 2003/04, is undergoing a medical to put the finishing touches on the deal.

Meanwhile, in-form Birmingham have completed the signing of Sporting Gijon midfielder Michel to provide competition for the likes of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson.

NBA: Bobcats look to continue run against Knicks

One of 2010's hottest teams, the Charlotte Bobcats can extend their win streak to four with a win in the Big Apple against the New York Knicks.

Larry Brown's team are chasing the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors, currently fifth and sixth in the East, and have established themselves as serious contenders for the playoffs.

Just months after being written off as offensively limited and a likely lottery team, the trade for Stephen Jackson has been the catalyst for a Bobcat surge. Look for the winning run to reach four tonight.

Cricket: England grab heroic draw, Pakistan stunned by Aussies

An enthralling couple of days of Test cricket left England relieved, Australia jubilant, South Africa frustrated and Pakistan stunned.

South Africa set England a mammoth target in the Third Test in Cape Town and needed just seven wickets on the final day to level the series. But a gritty stand between Paul Collingwood (40) and Ian Bell (78) gave the tourists hope before last-wicket pair Graeme Swann and Graham Onions completed a heroic escape.

England now carry a 1-0 lead into the Fourth Test.

Over in Australia, Pakistan managed to turn victory into defeat in extraordinary circumstances. The Aussies ended day three just 80 runs ahead with two wickets left but Mike Hussey's hundred helped set Pakistan 176 to win.

It proved beyond the tourists as Nathan Hauritz took 5-53 and Pakistan were skittled for an embarrassing 139. After being bowled out for a mere 127 in the first innings, this represented an amazing recovery from Australia and was Hauritz's finest hour in Test cricket.

NBA: Grizzlies run continues with win in Portland

Sooner or later, the Memphis Grizzlies will have to be taken seriously. Tuesday night's win over the Portland Trail Blazers was their fourth straight and moves the team to 17-16.

A debatable late foul call on Brandon Roy left injury-hit Portland fuming but the Grizzlies kept their cool and used a 13-1 run to win the contest 109-105.

The Western Conference is hugely competitive this year with Utah and New Orleans both adrift of the playoff spots despite boasting talents like Deron Williams and Chris Paul. But Memphis are not about to give up hope.

OJ Mayo and Zach Randolph both poured in 27 points while Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol had 18 apiece to give the Grizzlies a perfectly balanced attack.

Roy led the Blazers with 27 of his own but the home side ran out of steam down the stretch as their injury crisis, which forced coach Nate McMillan into a seven-man rotation, caught up with them.

Take nothing away from Memphis, though. They are on a fine run and will believe that they have the weapons to mount an assault on the playoff places.

NBA: Billups out again

The Denver Nuggets will have to take the court without Chauncey Billups again tonight against the visiting Golden State Warriors.

Billups' groin injury is on the mend but he will wait until Friday's clash with the Cleveland Cavaliers to make his much-awaited return.

The Nuggets have limped along in his absence, going 2-6 in the eight games since he picked up the injury in mid December against the Houston Rockets, but might be boosted by Carmelo Anthony's return from a knee problem.

Denver battered the Warriors at the Pepsi Center earlier this season but, with their current injury list, any win would be gratefully welcomed by head coach George Karl.

Soccer: Villarreal turning season around

When Villarreal slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Xerez earlier this season, the Yellow Submarines were bottom of the table and manager Ernesto Valverde's job looked in serious jeopardy.

But since then, Xerez have failed to add another victory while Villarreal have turned their season around. The players now seem to have overcome the departure of former boss Manuel Pellegrini, who moved to Real Madrid in the summer, and the results have finally started to arrive.

They sit ninth at present and the whole turnaround speaks volumes for the importance of keeping faith in a manager. Villarreal could easily have panicked and sacked Valverde after the sluggish start. Instead they backed him.

And the club's key players have come good, too. A squad containing the likes of Marcos Senna, Giuseppe Rossi and Santi Cazorla was always too strong to be scrapping in the relegation zone. With the season not yet at the halfway point, Villarreal might still challenge for a European spot.

Soccer: Darren Ferguson to take over at Preston

According to BBC Sport, Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren is to become the new Preston North End manager.

Ferguson left former club Peterborough in November by mutual consent, having helped Posh earn promotion to the Championship in 2009.

He will replace Alan Irvine, who was sacked by Preston last week.
